What does a typical foster carer look like?

There is no perfect formula for being a foster carer. The most important thing is to have a caring heart and open mind, to understand that children in care are likely to have complex family situations and have faced difficulties in their lives.

But if you have a desire to change the world – one child at a time – we’d love to work with you. As you would imagine there are a range of things – some required by law, others plain common sense – that you (and we) need to consider.

You need to be:

  • Living on the Central Coast or Sydney’s northern suburbs and planning to stay put for at least  12 – 24 months
We want to keep kids local and in stable placements.
  • Over 25 years of age
We find that few years of adult experience helps.
  • Of good character
We don’t mind that parking ticket but certain offences are a no-go and we are legally required to do police checks.
  • Prepared to be patient, caring, non-judgemental and willing to ask for help with anything you find challenging and to be further skilled
Of course we provide 24/7 support and expert assistance referral and resources, including an allowance to cover any financial needs of the child in your care. You just need to be accepting of a child’s cultural/ethnic/religious and family backgrounds.
  • Willing to support family preservation and restoration
Our kids need to have meaningful connection with their communities, families of origin and supporting families. To be safely restored is important.
  • Living in adequate and safe accommodation
That is clean, in good repair, properly ventilated, lit and heated, and, importantly, enabling a child to have their own room for sleeping, school studies or downtime.
  • Able to work as part of the team supporting the child you are caring for
That is, the CatholicCare foster care support team and the child’s family of origin.
  • Not suffering from alcoholism/drug addiction/mental illness or any other serious physical illness
Enough said – we want kids to be kids.

If you have any further questions about fostering a child or young person, our team is here to help.
