Come and work in our Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service providing support, advocacy, referrals and information for women experiencing domestic violence.
About the role
We help women obtain effective legal protection by applying for an Apprehended Domestic Violence Order (ADVO). This service operates at Hornsby and Manly local courts. We also refer women and children to other services including legal, housing, financial, health and counselling support.
- Co-ordinating and monitoring Safety Action Meetings in the LCP area, this includes secretariat support;
- Following up with Safety Action Meeting members regarding actions agreed as needed;
- Liaising with victims in relation to safety action plans developed at Safety Action Meetings and / or appropriate support provided;
- Assisting the WDVCAS to comply with reporting and other requirements under the WDVCAS Service Agreement;
- Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with key WDVCAS partners including NSW Police Force, Local Courts, legal representatives and referral agencies, in order to facilitate client access to those agencies and services;
- Attending court user forums, Domestic and Family Violence Reforms regional governance meetings and other relevant forums where required.
We are looking for applicants with a demonstrated understanding of the dynamics, complexities and legal and social welfare consequences of domestic violence, applicants with the desire to effect positive change and whose personal values align with our own: Respect, Hope, Commitment, Professionalism, Excellence and Social Justice.
Essential to this role is:
- Demonstrated understanding of the criminal justice response to domestic violence including Apprehended Domestic Violence Order (ADVO) applications and criminal prosecutions and related legal matters such as family law, care and protection, migration and victim’s compensation issues;
- Demonstrated understanding of the particular needs of and challenges faced by clients from diverse communities, especially ATSI and CALD clients
- Excellent communication skills, particularly in negotiation, advocacy and conflict resolution
- A high-level organisational, administrative, financial and management skills;
- Being a woman is a genuine occupational qualification for this position under the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act.
